Digital Photography Class - Cracking the Photography Code By Connie Fillmore

Don't roll up your eyes and groan at the mere mention of "class". Not all classes are as bad as those in your school and college were. In fact, a digital photography class promises bounties of fun and it is guaranteed that it will be one class of your lifetime, which you would not want to skip at any cost.

The soaring popularity of digital photography has seen digital photography schools springing up in almost every nook and cranny of your locality. So, which one to enroll to ensure your money's worth?

Any good digital photography school worth it's salt will offer intensive training and impart comprehensive knowledge in almost all the aspects of digital photography. And this also includes enlightening you on the internal mechanism of a digital camera. You can expect there will be no shortcuts either.

Your digital photography class will start out with an introductory session that will give you an overview of the camera setup and what digital photography is all about. You will be trained on the functions and settings of your camera so that after the completion of the course you will know your camera like the palm of your hand and will be better able to appreciate the scope of digital photography.

Being well versed in the parts and workings of a digital camera ensures that when you go to buy one for yourself, you can make the right choice.

Digital photography classes, as a principle, concentrate on teaching you the manual mode of photography. This is because the hallmark of a great photographer is definitely his skills in wielding control over how his photographs turn out. And wielding control entails that you do not let the camera decide when the flash should be used or being spot on with the focus and exposure settings without the intervention of the camera's in-built scene modes.

There are many digital photography classes that arrange field trips for its students. And you will surely agree that a hands-on experience in outdoor shooting is actually far more beneficial than a theory class. Besides, a few bouts of outdoor filming will also ensure that your lighting issues are sorted out. Thus, the nitty-gritty of lighting like using filters to tone down the tints of a photo taken in the harsh midday sun or the details of night photography are best appreciated when tried first hand.

A stint at a digital photography class will hone your photographic skills manifold times with in-depth training in composition and blending the rules of traditional photography with the digital photography mode. The fine points of filming in different settings and churning out optimum results should also be a part of the curriculum.

Digital photography classes are particular about details. Therefore, you will not be stopping at filming lessons only. You will be taken through the editing and processing of digital photographs too. You will be taught the ways and means of accessing the images stored in the camera's memory cards and the PC editing tweaks that will transform even the drabbest image into an enchanting piece of art. Besides, you will also be educated on how to compress the digital image files and have them uploaded on the Net.

There are hundred and one things that you can do with your digital images. Printing is definitely one of them. And you can be sure that your digital photography class instructor will teach you the fundamentals of getting digital prints.

A digital photography class is an excellent way of acquainting yourself with the 'ins' and 'outs' of digital photography. Attend one and flaunt your skills with the lens and the shutter.

Digital Camera Prices - How to REALLY Get the Best Deal By Robert Bezman

When dealing with digital camera prices, avoid your natural tendency of "buy low, sell high." What do we mean?

Let's say you're interested in purchasing a Canon digital SLR. Once you're sure you have identified your ideal camera, you search the internet and photography magazines for the best price. In this example, the "retail" price for the Canon body is $700 (remember - SLRs are only the camera body, which can be mated to a variety of individually purchased lenses). After checking a variety of sources for discounted digital camera prices, you determine the best prices for this specific Canon digital SLR runs between $570-$590. What do you do?

I buy it from the place selling it for $570, of course!

Not so fast. If you have only bought from traditional retail outlets, you need to familiarize yourself with some on-line buying strategies...

Shipping prices vary significantly depending upon who you buy it from.
Tax may or may not be charged.
Therefore, when purchasing ANYTHING online (i.e., from a non-retail outlet), only consider the entire cost of digital camera + tax + shipping.

So, let's reevaluate the first point again. The Canon digital SLR body alone may range between $570-$590, but when figuring out true digital camera prices, use the formula above.
Now, we discover that the real total cost for your Canon (Nikon, Fuji, or whatever) ranges between $587 - $629. Now, we're getting somewhere.

Do you run out and order from the $587 place? If you say "yes," you've made a rookie internet purchasing mistake.

I know, I know. You're chomping at the bit. You know what you want, you found the "best" price (you think), you have your credit card in hand... why shouldn't you buy now? Because you're using "retail store" mentality to purchase on the internet.

When looking for the best digital camera prices on the internet, there are new considerations that only experience can teach you. Here are the most important points:

Is the Canon in stock? There is often a mysterious correlation between the cheapest prices and product unavailability. You don't want to order your digital camera and then have it sit on backorder for 6 weeks, do you?

Does your Nikon come with a USA warranty or is it what's called "grey goods?" You want to verify it's a USA warranty, unless you don't mind having to service it internationally.
What is the customer service level of the seller? You can find out by checking up on them before you buy at www.pricegrabber.com/rating_summary. Personally, I won't buy from anyone who doesn't have at least a 4 out of 5 star rating and plenty of history.

The last "test" I use before purchasing at the best total digital camera prices is my gut. I have walked away from deals after speaking with certain order entry people. Let's face it, if you're older than 25, you start to develop of sense of who NOT TO BELIEVE when they say "trust me."

Finally, always order with a credit card because if something goes wrong, the credit card company can be your greatest friend.

OK. You've done it! You're about to congratulate yourself on uncovering the best digital camera prices, from the best vendor, with great delivery, etc. There's just one more thing to be aware of...

The Insidious "Package Deal" Sales Technique

Here's how this approach goes. Using the same example figures above for our wonderful Canon digital SLR, you found a vendor who is willing to sell you the Canon body + tax + shipping for the fantastic price of $515 (remember, the true range you had previously determined was $587 - $629).

In the land of best digital camera prices, this is known as "winning the lotto." So, what do you do? You jump on it of course! But, here's how the end of this telephone order typically goes...

(Seller) Congratulations. You just got a great deal. And, would you believe that we have a super-saver package on this Canon which includes the EF 28-200mm lens for an unbelievable package price of $1,000. (That puts the cost of this lens at $485, when you can buy it anywhere for $360, but you don't know that. Maybe that’s what they meant by “unbelievable.”)

(You) Well, I already have 6 lenses, so I don't need anymore.

(Seller) No problem. You do know how these new digital SLRs eat up memory. We have a 2GB memory card that we currently have a promotion on. It's normally $460 (really $220) that they're allowing us to sell for only $375 with the purchase of a camera.

(You) [Since you do know you'll need memory, and haven't had time yet to see what a good price for accessories of digital camera prices are, you might agree. Instead, however, you let the seller know that you're holding off on memory right now.]

(Seller) [Knowing it's his last chance...] Ok, then. Let's just pick out a solid camera bag so at least your camera will be secure. (His point is valid, but what he's going to try to sell you is a $120 camera bag that you can purchase anywhere for $49.95.)

(You) I already have 3 bags, so I'll pass. How soon can I expect delivery on my Canon?

(Seller) Let me check the computer. Oh, I can't believe this... while we were on the phone, the last 3 Canons were sold, so we don't have any more. But, I'll be happy to take your order and ship yours as soon as it comes in (read as "never").

Of course, the actual phone conversation may be slightly different, substituting extended warranties and batteries for camera bag and memory, but you get the picture.
Bottom line, when looking for the best digital camera prices, consider all the costs and buy from someone you can trust.

Is Film Better than Digital for Weddings? By Juan Carlos Torres

As a professional wedding photographer I get this question asked more than anything else. Rarely will somebody ask me about my wedding photography education, awards, or professional memberships. I believe the root to this question lies on misinformation about the different qualities of film and digital.

Film
For a photographer with no computer experience or who does not want to spend the time correcting digital files film is the way to go. Film allows the photographer to photograph a wedding or event and at the end of the day be done with the process. When the time comes to print the photographs the photo lab will take care of color balance adjustments and retouching. From a technical aspect film has a wider dynamic range than digital. This means than in high contrast scenes film has the edge. It can handle them better without blowing the highlights.

Digital
The greatest advantage for digital is the control of the photographic process in the hands of the artist. The photographer is not longer at the mercy of the lab to produce a photo that reflects his inspiration and vision.

Digital allows the photographer to shoot more frames without the expense of film and development, which can translate into a more complete coverage. After the event the photographer simply edits out the bad photos and you as the customer end up with the best selection of the day. The digital medium is ideal for backup. Multiple copies of the event can simultaneously exist in different locations in the event of a catastrophe. With film there is always only one copy of the negatives, which could be duplicated, but the second copy suffers significant quality degradation. With digital it is possible to produce different versions of the same photo including black and white, color, sepia, etc. through a very simple process.

Digital allows for a faster workflow. If your photographer offers digital gallery previews your photographs can be available in a matter of hours for viewing and ordering. In addition, slide shows and DVDs can be produced for the client.

Digital retouching in the hands of an expert can create amazing results. Since there is no chemistry involved to develop digital the digital process is more environmentally friendly.

Resolution
In terms of resolution both film and digital can produce similar results. With the advent of 11 mega pixel and above digital cameras, digital has the edge for enlargements due to its lower noise levels and the lack of grain. Many purist talk of the film look, which is basically film grain and noise that gives film its unique look. This film look can easily be simulated with digital image processing techniques. Many people would be surprised to know that most photo labs will scan film prior to printing. In other words direct film to print is a myth. Digital photos when printed on true photo paper are virtually indistinguishable from their film counterparts.

What does the film vs. digital war means to the client? I believe that when selecting a wedding photographer the client has to focus on the end product more than anything else. At the end it doesn’t matter if the photographer uses film or digital. What really counts is the quality of the photographs that he or she will produce for your wedding day. There are good and bad photographers using film or digital. Your task as a client is to weed out the bad ones and select a photographer that will capture beautiful memories of your wedding day.

Digital Photography Art By Kevin Rockwell

Well we used to all go out and shoot images on our film cameras, run the film to the corner store or kiosk to get it developed and then once the prints were hand we tended to stick them away without much more than a few minutes notice. Those days are no more as digital photography has grabbed hold of the consumer marketplace. Now we have tons of images in our cameras, on our hard disks and the options of what to do with them are growing and growing every year.
Digital photography has now found its way into more than half of the homes in America.

However most people still order out to get their images printed. Maybe it is not the corner film kiosk of the old days but there is still a very strong market for image printing. Nowadays you can take your images to Costco, the nearby photo store where they might have a digital printing kiosk in the store, or you can upload them to the various internet sites devoted to printing your images such as Shutterfly, Ofoto, and Snapfish to name a few.

Since the year 2000 the number of images converted into conventional prints has been steadily sliding down and could go 5% further this year. However due to the interesting rise of alternative ways to print your images the industry predicts that revenues will rise overall this year. Now why would that be?

Well it turns out that there are some very lucrative ways for companies to make money in the digital age including printing reproductions from digital photographs onto posters, stamps, postcards, T-shirts, chairs, wallpaper, and bronze plaques. Even ceramic tile is being used as a medium for digital printing as designers are using images to decorate them for spas, restaurants, and fireplace mantels.

We have now entered the era of functional art versus just decorative art. Now you can touch it and get a more personal feeling from your digital photography. In addition you can put these digital images on wood, stone, plastic, and metal as well as conventional paper of every type. Either through software on your own computer or through vendors consumers can print their images on birthday cards, calendars, and storytelling photo books that actually get used instead of being tucked away in a drawer like most of our albums of old.

The camera makers have done a fine job of selling digital cameras to the population, but now that they are so infused to the marketplace it will take some creativity to for them to make money off of these sales going forward beyond just getting us to upgrade our digital cameras every year or two.

That will require some new methods for organizing digital photos, new methods of displaying images (perhaps along the lines of the wireless digital display frames that have shown some promise of late) and the ability to print our own custom books using our own digital photographs. That is something that would stay out on display in my home!

Did you know that in the past ten years digital cameras have managed to be sold into over half the homes in the US? The prediction is that number could go as high as seventy per cent by the yearn 2009. Old line film companies like Kodak have had to scramble to move into the digital camera game, with a fair amount of success as they applied old film lessons to their line of digital cameras such as consumer simplicity first, but even they are still leaning on the sales of inks used to print images on computers to hold the profit line.

They have over 75,000 in store kiosks installed throughout the country and are planning for new ones that can handle 900 prints per hour! Retail is strong for getting your digital prints as the big stores such as Wal-Mart and Costco battle it out for your business and in the on line market the field has been whittled down to the strongest. That means that the price per print that was once in the high twenties has now dropped to around 17 cents per print on line and 21 cents per print in store.

So where do you go for these art versions of your digital images? Be prepared to spend more for the experience but get a nice artistic version of your digital photography. Some of the spots to check out are Zazzle.com, Photopetgifts.com, and Matthewsbronze.com. For custom digital photo books you should check out Shutterfly. Imagine the look on your kids face when you give them storybook and it features images of them in the story!

More Digital Photography Tips By Anne Clarke

How many of us once dreamed of becoming professional photographers for “National Geographic,” only to find out that we did not even know how to get the lens cap off of our cameras? And now that digital cameras are becoming more and more common, it seems that we will have to learn all over again how to take a photograph, this time with a digital camera.
Do not worry – realize that this time, you have technology on your side. You may not end up with photographs worthy of “National Geographic” status, but you will be able to get some that will look beautiful on your wall and in your photo album.

Here are some tips for taking better photographs with digital cameras:

· Get to know your camera. It may seem tedious, but be sure to read through your owner’s manual. Spending just an hour or two acquainting yourself with your camera will save you a lot of stress down the line.

· When you first get your digital camera, practice taking photos. Make sure that you know how to use it before you take it on your vacation or to your daughter’s graduation! You do not want to miss great photo opportunities because you are too busy trying to turn your camera on!

· Do not be shy – take as many photographs as want. Most digital cameras come with memory cards that hold a multitude of photographs – if yours does not, get an extra memory card. If you take a hundred photographs of one thing, at least one of them will turn out!

· Use the features on your camera! Most digital cameras have different modes for different types of photographs – night mode, landscape, portrait, macro, etc. Understand these modes, and know when to use each one.

· Use the LCD screen – if your digital camera has a good LCD screen, you will be able to tell almost immediately whether or not you took a good photo – if your daughter’s eyes were closed, be sure to take another one!

· Remember: close-ups are often more interesting than shots from a distance. You do not have to have everyone’s feet in every photo! Consider taking a photo that includes everyone from just the shoulders up. Also, if you are taking a photo of your family at the Epcot Center, for instance, realize that you do not have to fit the entire Epcot globe into your photo. If you do that, your family will look like ants in the photo and there is no reason for them to have stood in the frame in the first place. Instead, get a close-up of your family with just a small aspect of the globe in the background. Or get a photo of your family by the sign, instead. You can always use the landscape feature of your digital camera to take a photo of the entire globe, later.

· The subject of your photograph does not always have to be the center of your photograph! Try taking photographs with your subject slightly to the side of the frame, for instance.

· Be aware of lighting. Without learning too much about how lighting affects a photograph, you can still be aware of certain aspects. For instance, if the sun is setting behind your subject, your subject may turn out as a silhouette. Of course, if you try take a photo of your friend with the sunlight hitting him from the front, be aware that he will probably have to squint his eyes.

· If it is extremely bright out (like if you are in bright sunlight or in the snow), hold up something of a neutral color (like a dark tan bag or light gray sweatshirt) to the camera as you focus (most digital cameras focus when you push the button halfway down), then remove it before you take the photograph of your actual subject.

· Try new things. Do not be afraid to get down on the ground to take a photo of an object or a person from a different angle. You do not have to take all of your photos head-on. Take a photo of a sign from an angle, take a photo of the Eiffel Tower from the bottoms looking up, etc.

· If you are on vacation, do not get stuck taking photos of your fellow travelers standing in front of one famous, forgettable building after another. Yes, you can still take these photographs, but consider taking a photograph of your friend in front of the sign, too, so that you at least know which building it is! Also, be sure to take photographs of not just places, but of memories. For instance, be sure to get a picture of your friend’s feet as she stumbles around with a broken high heel. Take a photo of the menu from your favorite restaurant. Take photos of not just the beautiful fronts of buildings, but the graffiti-ed, trashy alleys, too. Take photographs of things that you will not see on the postcards, of things that are unique to your own personal experience!

· You do not need to set up every single shot. Take photos of people when they are unaware that you even have your camera out. Go ahead and take some photos of strangers, as well.

· One of the benefits of taking digital photographs is the fact that you can touch them up on your computer at home. Be sure to make use of this great feature. You do not need to spend your time touching up all of your photos, but definitely go through and fix up your favorites – you can straighten them, remove red eyes, brighten or darken them, and do many other things, as well.

· If you are unsure as to whether or not you think you would like using a digital camera, try out a disposable digital camera, first. Disposable digital cameras are also excellent for if you are going somewhere where there is the potential of breaking or losing your camera.

Anne Clarke writes numerous articles for websites on gardening, parenting, fashion, art, and home decor. Her background includes teaching and gardening. For more of her articles on digital photography and cameras, please visit Disposable Digital Cameras.

Comparing Traditional and Digital Photography By Jill Kane

When it comes to photography, the digital wave is very much in evidence and yet, both operate on the same principles. Both have a lens, an aperture and a shutter. The difference lies in how the image is formed. Classic or traditional photography uses film on which the image is captured and then developed in a darkroom with chemicals to give you negatives. These need to be printed before you can see the picture in its final form. In a digital camera, you bypass all these processes because the image is captured by an electronic sensor. You aim, click and almost immediately, you can see the picture you took in the viewfinder. There is no developing, no negatives, no printing. Just the sensor which is actually millions of pixels or megapixels where light gets converted into a number.

The pixels in a particular camera are constant. So if you were to print out a picture that is larger than the usual size you print, you would find that it is not as sharp as the smaller size. So you should keep this in mind when you are buying your camera. If you feel that you will probably want to print larger pictures, go in for one with a greater number of pixels. If you are not terribly particular, it does not really matter. Apart from a slight difference in sharpness, the picture quality does not suffer. You could find out from your photography store just how big a print it would be all right to print from your camera.

The greater the number of pixels or picture elements the sensor has, the better the picture quality and of course, the higher the price. In fact most cameras have a greater number of pixels, also referred to as ‘resolution’ than a regular computer screen. The resolution is expressed in megapixels. The number of pixels for black and white photographs can be a smaller number as it only involves the two colors and the many shades of gray in between. The number of pixels needed for color photography, however, is much more. The greater the number of pixels, the better the color quality. Digital cameras usually come with the capacity to produce 16 million colors expressed as 24 bits a pixel. Professional cameras have been known to go up to 48 bits a pixel which translates to nearly 300 billion shades!
